SOA World Editorial - Discovering Dr. Dolittle
From the title, you might be thinking that I'm about to start this month's editorial with a reference to talking to animals and somehow tie that into SOA. Instead, what I actually would like to talk about is the pushmi-pullyu (I got the spelling from Wikipedia; I always thought it was 'push-me pull

MetaCarta Introduces Location Intelligence for the Enterprise
For the First Time, Enterprises Can Visualize Geographic Relationships between Structured and Unstructured Content

Digg This!

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- MetaCarta, Inc., a pioneer in geographic-based business intelligence, today announced an enterprise feature set for their Geographic Intelligence System that organizes vast amounts of data geographically as well as enables users to visualize geographic relationships between structured and unstructured content. Its products are widely used within the government sector and are now entering the enterprise market. It is ideal for enterprises in vertical markets where geographic relevancy matters such as energy, insurance, environmental, education, emergency response and fraud detection.

According to multiple studies, including the National Academy of Science, 75-85 percent of all enterprise data is 'unstructured' which means that it is not stored in a database and cannot be searched easily. It is stored on multiple repositories in various formats including intranets, e-mail, shared drives, portals, and document management systems. 85 percent of all unstructured data have some geographical context or "geo-focus." Traditional search engines do not have geo-spatial search capabilities and are unable to fuse or integrate that geo-spatial information with text information that is in different formats and often from multiple sources.

"Enterprises need a better way to combine disparate content to provide deeper understanding for location-based decisions," said David Sonnen, Consultant at IDC. "MetaCarta has an innovative and powerful approach to tapping the valuable geographic information currently locked inside unstructured content."

About MetaCarta's Geographic Intelligence System

MetaCarta's Geographic Intelligence System enriches content with geographic intelligence bridging the gap between text and spatial information for enterprises where geographic relevancy matters. It is comprised of three components and can be purchase as a complete system or as individual technologies:

* Geographic Text Search (GTS) -- GTS combines text and geographic search capabilities simultaneously for structured and unstructured content and visualizes the results on a map * GeoTagger -- metatags (XML) content with geographic references to make content geo-"smart" * Geographic Data Modules (GDMs) -- a collection of place names and coordinates (a gazetteer) with relevancy values and Natural Language Processing (NLP) based on industry, business or topic. About MetaCarta, Inc.

MetaCarta, Inc., a provider of geographic intelligence solutions, provides users with map-driven geographic search, geographic referencing, and data visualization capabilities. MetaCarta products make data and unstructured content "location-aware" making that information geographically relevant. These innovative solutions make it possible for customers to discover, visualize, and act on important location-based information. Founded by a team of MIT researchers in 1999, MetaCarta is privately-held, with US headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts and offices in Vienna, Virginia and Houston, Texas.
